Sabrina Marecos is a 2019 Gazard Family Fellow.

Sabrina Marecos is a Paraguayan biologist working in the Department of Biotechnology at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción. She leads the development, and currently manages, the first Bio FabLab in Paraguay, a community lab which consists of scientists and students involved in research in the fields of biotechnology and synthetic biology, where hands-on prototyping is applied to solving real-world problems.

Her involvement in synthetic biology started after completing the ‘How To Grow Almost Anything’ course in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a program that she now instructs at the Bio FabLab. She is drawn to projects using genetic engineering to improve environmental sustainability and optimize agricultural processes. Her experience with water resources conservation inspired her constant search for solutions to issues regarding water efficiency in agriculture and wastewater treatment. She joined the GLFP with the goal of reaching out to her community and improving the acceptance of biotechnology, in the hopes that those issues can be approached more effectively going forward.
