Mwimali Murenga

Mwimali Murenga is a maize breeder and coordinator at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO). He is also the country coordinator for the Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA) Kenya Project, where he is responsible for the development of drought- and stress-tolerant and stem borer-resistant GM maize.

He holds a doctorate in plant breeding and a master’s in plant breeding and genetics with a focus on insect-protected Bt maize.

He hopes the Alliance for Science Global Leadership Fellows Program will add to his professional development and his ability to advocate for informed science-based decision-making. He also wants to support research that will improve the well-being, food security and livelihoods of farmers, youth and scientists in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa.
